Correlation analysis between social depression and professional identity,turnover intention of nurses in a tertiary hospital

Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlation between social depression and professional identity, turnover intention of nurses in a tertiary hospital.Methods From September to October 2019, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 588 nurses in a tertiary hospital in Quanzhou using the social depression scale, nurses′ occupational identity rating scale, and turnover intention scale.The status of nurses′ social depression, professional identity and turnover intention was analyzed, the impact of demographic characteristics on social depression was investigated and the correlation between social depression and professional identity, turnover intention of nurses was analyzed.Results The senior depression score of 588 nurses was (20.19±9.51) points, the colleague depression score was (19.72±8.27) points, the total score of professional identity was (100.52±22.94) points, and the total turnover intention score was (15.09±4.68) points.There were statistically significant differences in the scores of senior depression and colleague depression among nurses in different educational backgrounds, titles, and years of work (P<0.05).There were statistically significant differences in the colleague depression scores among nurses under different employment conditions (P<0.05).Both senior depression and colleague depression were negatively related to professional identity but positively related to the turnover intention (P<0.01).Conclusion The nurses in the tertiary hospital have suffered from moderate social depression.The nurses′ professional identity is at a medium level but the turnover intention is higher, which is obviously related to social depression.Hospital administrators should actively take effective measures to reduce social depression in nurses′work and create a good working environment for nurses to improve their professional identity and reduce their turnover intention, thus stabilizing the hospital nursing team.
