Efficacy of peer support interven tion on quality of life of community empty-nest elderly patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract:ObjectiveTo explore the efficacy of peer support intervention on improving the quality of life in community empty-nest elderly patients with diabetes mellitus.Methods100 empty-nest elderly patients with diabetes from adjacent communities in Shenzhen were selected in this study from January 2015 to July 2015.The patients were divided into the observation group and the control group according to the random number table method,with 50 cases in each group.Patients in the control group were given routine diabetes health education and guidance,while patients in the observation group were given 6-month peer support intervention on the basis of the control group.The self-management activity,quailty of life,the level of HbA1c and BMI of patients were compared between two groups.ResultsBefore intervention,there were no significantly different among the scores of 5 dimensions of self-management activity in two groups(P>0.05);after intervention,those in the observation group were increased,and compared with those before intervention,the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05),but there were no statistically significant differences in the cintrol group between those before and after intervention(P>0.05).And those in observation group were higher than those in control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Before intervention,there were no significantly different among the score of DSQL and the level of HbA1c and BMI in two groups(P>0.05);after intervention,those in the observation group were all declined,and compared with those before intervention,the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05),but there were no statistically significant differences in the cintrol group between those before and after intervention (P>0.05).And those in observation group was lower than those in control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).ConclusionPeer support intervention can improve Community empty nest elderly diabetes patients′self-management ability,improve their quality of life,effectively control blood glucose fluctuation,and it is worth promoting.
