Prevalence of dental caries and its impact on growth and development among pupils in a town of Shanghai

Abstract:Objective To understand the prevalence of dental caries among pupils in a town of Shanghai and its impact on the growth and development of pupils, and to provide the basis for the formulation of dental caries prevention and control strategies for pupils.Methods The dental examination data of 7014 pupils in a town of Shanghai from September 2016 to October 2018 were collected.The detection rate of dental caries was analyzed according to year, sex, age and grade.The effects of caries on the growth and development of wasting, growth retardation and anemia were analyzed.Results From September 2016 to October 2018, the total caries rate of primary school students in a town in Shanghai was 58.97%.The caries rate of primary school students in a town of Shanghai in 2017 was higher than that in 2016 and 2018, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).There was no significant difference in caries rate between primary school students of different genders (P>0.05).The caries rate of the second grade students was higher than that of other grade groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The caries rate of primary school students aged 9-<10 years was higher than that of other age groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The caries rate in the emaciated group was higher than that in the normal group, the hyperrecombinant group and the obesity group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The caries rate of primary school students in the growth retardation group was higher than that in the normal growth group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion The prevalence of dental caries among pupils in a town of Shanghai is high and has an impact on their growth and development.Therefore, prevention and control of dental caries among pupils should be strengthened.
