Effect of hyperbaric oxygen combined with intensity modulated radiotherapy in the treatment of patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) combined with intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) on patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).Methods A total of 80 patients with advanced NPC from June 2016 to June 2018 in the First Hospital of Naval Force of Southern Theater Command PLA were selected as the research object.The patients were divided into the HBO combined with IMRT group (34 cases)and the only IMRT group (46 cases) according to their treatment intention.In the HBO combined with IMRT group,HBO treatment was performed first,then intensity-modulated radiotherapy.The only IMRT group was treated with normal IMRT.After the treatment,the patients′ symptoms and signs,Karnofsky performance state score and acute radiotherapy response were observed and recorded in the two groups,and the nasopharyngeal tumor volume regression was compared between the two groups.Results After the completion of the whole treatment course,the regression rate of neurological symptoms and signs of patients in the HBO combined with IMRT group were higher than those in the only IMRT group,and the difference was also statistically significant (P<0.05).The improvement effect of quality of life in the HBO combined with IMRT group was better than that in the only IMRT group,with statistically significant differences (P<0.05).The incidence of acute radioactive side reactions equal or greater than grade 3 in the HBO combined with IMRT group was 17.6%,which was much lower than that in the only IMRT group (41.3%),and there was also a statistically significant difference (P<0.05).MRI was reexamined 1 month after radiotherapy,and the tumor remission rate of patients in the HBO combined with IMRT group was higher than that in the only IMRT group,and the difference was also statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion For the patients with advanced NPC,HBO combined with IMRT can improve the curative effect of radiotherapy,relieve the neurological symptoms and signs,reduce the incidence of acute side effects of radiotherapy,and improve the quality of life of patients.
