Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of Berberine on gastrointestinal hormones and glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods Sixty patients with early T2DM who were treated in the Department of Endocrinology, Jiangxi Provincial People′s Hospital from January to December 2019 were selected as the research subjects, and all received conventional treatment. They were divided into control group and experimental group by random number table method, with 30 cases in each group. The control group was treated with Gliclazide, and the test group was added with Berberine orally. The changes in gastrointestinal hormones and glucose and lipid metabolism were compared between the two groups after 8 weeks of continuous treatment. Results There were no statistical differences in the level of fasting Ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), fasting C peptide, fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and total cholesterol (TC), and triacylglycerol (TG) before treatment(P>0.05). The fasting Ghrelin, GLP-1 and fasting C-peptide after 8 weeks of medication were higher than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The fasting Ghrelin, GLP-1, and fasting C-peptide in the test group were higher than those in the control group after 8 weeks of medication, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The levels of FBG and HbA1c in the two groups after 8 weeks of medication were lower than those before treatment, with statistical significances (P<0.05). The levels of FBG and HbA1c in the test group were lower than those in the control group after 8 weeks of medication, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The levels of TC and TG after 8 weeks of medication were lower than those before treatment in the two groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, the levels of TC and TG in the test group were lower than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion The use of Berberine in patients with early stage T2DM can help increase the level of gastrointestinal hormones, improve intestinal function, and promote glucose and lipid metabolism.
