Experimental study of platelet-rich fibrin in bone defect repair

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of the platelet-rich fibrin in the healing of bone defects,to provide reference for clinical application.Methods Three round bone defects (diameter 6 mm,thickness 2 mm) were made on the mandible of healthy male goats.Platelet-rich fibrin (experimental group) and oral repair membrane (repair membrane group) were filled in the first two defects,and the final defect was empty (blank group).The specimens were made at 4,8 and 12 weeks after operation for microscopy observation and osteometric analysis,and the osteogenic effect was compared in the three groups.Results There were many orderly arranged osteoblasts and trabeculaes in the experimental group and repair membrane group while there were fewer trabeculaes and more fibers in the blank group under microscopy at 4,8 and 12 weeks after operation,which indicated that the experimental group and repair membrane group had better osteogenic effect than the blank group.Osteometric analysis showed that at 4,8 and 12 weeks after operation,the percentage of trabecular area in the experimental group and the repair membrane group was higher than that in the blank group,the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).But there was no significant difference in the percentage of trabecular area between the experimental group and the repair membrane group (P>0.05).Conclusion Platelet-rich fibrin can promote osteogenesis in experimental bone defects.
