Abstract：In the theory of traditional Chinese medicine,osteoarthritis of the knees(KOA)is ascribed to the category of“knee pain”, “bone impediment”, “impediment syndrome”,etc.Professor Fan Yue-guang proposes that the location of KOA is in the sinew and bone,whose root cause of disease is kidney deficiency,manifestation with blood stasis.Block of blood stasis leads to the symptom of pain,thus KOA should be treated both manifestation and root cause of disease.Therefore,the prescriptions which can tonify kidney and activate blood should be used,tonifying kidney and strengthening bone for the root,activating blood and relieving pain for the manifestation.Bushen Huoxue Recipe(including Rehmannia Glutinosa,Psoralea Corylifolia,Salvia Miltiorrhiza,Ligusticum Wallichii,Fructus Lycii)has significant effect in anti-inflammatory,pro-vascularization,chondrocyte proliferation and repair,and has achieved satisfactory therapeutic effect in long-term clinical application,which is worthy of learning and promotion.Professor Fan Yueguang′s experience in treating KOA from the thought of kidney deficiency and blood stasis is summarized in this article.
