Effect analysis of continuous oral health education on prevention of dental caries in preschool children

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of continuous oral health education on the prevention of dental caries in preschool children.Methods A total number of 120 children from 3 to 4 years old in 2 kindergartens and their parents from Donghu District, Nanchang City were selected.The selection period was from March 2017 to September 2018.Children and their parents in one kindergarten were classified as the intervention group (60 children), and children and their parents in the another kindergarten were classified as the control group (60 children).The control group were given traditional oral health education for 3 months, and the intervention group was given continuous oral health education and traditional oral health education for 3 months.The incidence of caries before and after intervention, number of caries per capita, oral health knowledge mastery, and compliance after intervention were compared between the two groups.Results Before intervention, the incidence of caries in 120 children was 50.00%, and the number of caries per capita was (2.75±0.07) teeth.The incidence of caries and number of caries per capita in the control group after intervention were higher than those before intervention, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05).The incidence of caries and number of caries per capita in the intervention group after intervention were higher than those before intervention, without statistically significant differences (P>0.05).In the control group, the number of children who mastered that correct tooth brushing could prevent caries, correct tooth brushing methods, and mouthwash after meals after intervention was greater than that before intervention, without statistically significant difference (P>0.05).In the intervention group, the number of children who mastered that correct tooth brushing could prevent caries, correct tooth brushing methods, and mouthwash after meals after intervention was greater than that before intervention, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05).According to children′s behaviors such as brushing their teeth in the morning and evening,not picky eaters, and regular visits to the dentist, the compliance after intervention of the intervention group was higher than that of the control group, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05).Conclusion Continuous oral health education for preschool children can effectively prevent the incidence of caries.It can also significantly improve the children′s knowledge and compliance, and develop good oral hygiene behaviors.
