Clinical effect of thin combined with calcium alginate dressing in preventing early complications after PICC catheterization in elderly tumor patients |

Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of thin combined with calcium alginate dressing in preventing the early complications related to PICC tube insertion in elderly tumor patients. Methods During the period between May 2016 and December 2017, three hundred and six elderly tumor patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomly divided into control group (n=150) and observation group (n=156) by the order of catheterization. Patients in the control group were treated with wet hot compress to prevent early complications after catheterization, while the patients in the observation group were treated with thin combined with calcium alginate dressing after catheterization. The incidence of the PICC catheter related complications were evaluated for asubsequent week. Results Dressing ooze blood soaked states on the puncture points, PICC catheter-induced phlebitis and venous thrombosis rate in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion The adoption of thin combined with calcium alginate dressing after PICC catheterization can effectively reduce the incidence of early complications related to PICC catheterization in elderly tumor patients, and relieve patients′ suffering as well as nurses′ workload. It′s worthy of clinical promotion.
