Abstract Objective To investigate the toxicity of Zedoary Turmeric Oil Cream on rats after long term continuous percutaneous administration and its safety of topical application. Methods Thirty Sprague Dawley(SD)female rats were randomly divided into 3 groups(blank control group, intact skin group and damaged skin group),10 rats in every group.Blank control group was administrated with blank cream matrix, intact skin group and damaged skin group were administrated with zedoary turmeric oil cream. After three months of continuous administration, the body weight, blood biochemical indicators(red blood cell[RBC],white blood cell[WBC],haemoglobin[HGB],neutrophil percentage[NEUT],platelet count[PLT],monocyte percentage[MONO],lymphocyte ratio[LYMPH],eosinophilic percentage[EO],basophile percentage[BASO])and blood biochemical indexes(aspartate aminotransferase[AST],aminotransferase[ALT],gamma-Glutamyl transferase[GGT],total bile acid[TBA],total bilirubin[TBil],preserum albumin[PA],urea, uric acid[UA],creatinine[Crea])were detected. Results Three months after the administration, the WBC of the damaged skin group were higher than that of the blank control group, and the HGB of the damaged skin group was lower than that of the blank control group, the PA of the damaged skin group were higher than that of the blank control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).There were no significant differences of RBC,NEUT,PLT,MONO,LYMPH,EO,BASO,AST,ALT,GGT,TBA,TBil,Urea,UA,Crea among the three groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Zedoary Turmeric Oil Cream has no obvious long-term toxicity to experimental rats.
