Abstract Objective To investigate the clinical effect of Propylthiouracil and Methimazole in the treatment of elderly patients with hyperthyroidism. Methods A total of 116 elderly patients with hyperthyroidism admitted to our hospital from March 2017 to December 2018 were selected as the study subjects, they were divided into control group (58 cases) and observation group (58 cases) according to the random number table method, the control group was treated with Methimazole and the observation group was treated with Propylthiouracil. The rising rate of liver function, the duration and incidence of liver injury and abnormal blood cell count were compared between the two groups. Results The increase rate of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the incidence of liver injury in the observation group after treatment were higher than those in the control group, the differences were significant (P<0.05). The duration of liver injury in the observation group was longer than that in the control group, the difference was significant (P<0.05). The abnormal rate of blood cell count in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group, the difference was significant (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the increase rates of serum glutamic oxaloacetic aminotransferase (SGOT), total bilirubin (TBIL) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion In the treatment of elderly patients with hyperthyroidism, Propylthiouracil and Methimazole should be given according to the patient's condition. Medical staff should closely monitor the clinical indicators of the patients during the medication period, and deal with the adverse reactions caused by the patients after taking the medicine in time.
