Study on conical beam CT of the characteristics of temporal-mandibular joints in the patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate |

Abstract Objective To investigate the characteristics of temporal-mandibular joint in the patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate by conical beam CT.Methods A total of 16 patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP)admitted to the Department of Stomatology Orthodontics in Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from June 2015 to June 2017 were selected as the study group.In addition,16 normal occlusal patients who underwent orthodontic treatment in the same period were selected as the control group.Both groups were given conical beam CT examination.CH,RH,H,W and other indexes were compared between the two groups,and CH/RH and H/W were calculated.At the same time,the condylar morphology of the two groups were compared.Results The CH,H,W,CH/RH and H/W at the healthy side in the study group were compared with those at the same side in the control group,and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in RH and H/W between the two groups (P>0.05).The CH,H,W,CH/RH and H/W at ipsilateral side in the study group were compared with those in the control group,the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in RH and H/W between the two groups(P>0.05).The normal and abnormal condylar morphology at the healthy side in the study group was compared with that at the same side in the control group,the difference was statistically significant(χ2=28.571,P=0.000).The type of condylar morphology at the healthy side in the study group was compared with that at the ipsilateral side,the difference was statistically significant (χ2=16.667,P=0.000).Conclusion Conical beam CT has a higher diagnostic value in examining the characteristics of temporal-mandibular joint in the patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate.Compared with non-UCCLP healthy population,the condyles of UCCLP patients are short and its neck is narrow compared with mandibular ramus.
