Abstract:Objective To compare the antibacterial effects in vitro of Hongteng Enema Decoction and Decoction-free Granules. Methods The paper-diffusion method was used to determine the in vitro antibacterial activity of Hongteng Enema Decoction and Decoction-free Granules on Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The antibacterial effects of the two different dosage forms were examined by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone.ResultsHongteng Enema Decoction and Decoction-free Granules had no antibacterial effects on Candida albicans. For Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, the diameter of the inhibition zone of Hongteng Enema Decoction was bigger than that of Decoction-free Granule, and there was a significant difference between them (P<0.05).For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the diameter of the inhibition zone of Hongteng Enema Decoction was lower than that of Decoction-free Granule, and there was a significant difference between them(P<0.05).Conclusion Hongteng Enema Decoction and Decoction-free Granule have similar antibacterial effects in vitro. The antibacterial effect of Hongteng Enema Decoction against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is better than that of Decoction-free Granule. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the antibacterial effects of Hongteng Enema Decoction-free Granule is better than that of the Hongteng Enema Decoction.
