Effect of peer education on the psychological pressure and self-efficacy of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus |

Abstract Objective To explore the effect of peer education on the psychological pressure and self-efficacy of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A total of 128 elderly patients with T2DM treated in the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2018 to June 2020 were selected as study subjects. The patients were divided into control (n=64) and observation (n=64) groups by random number table method. The control group was given routine education, and the observation group was given joint peer education on the basis of the control group, with intervention for 2 months in both groups. The psychological stress and self-efficacy changes were compared between the two groups. Results After 2 months of intervention, the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depressin scale (SDS) of the two groups were lower than those before the intervention, and the SAS and SDS scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After 2 months of intervention, the scores of clinical treatment, exercise, diet and foot management in the two groups were higher than those before the intervention, while the scores of clinical treatment, exercise, diet and foot management in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, with significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusion Peer education for elderly T2DM patients can effectively relieve their psychological pressure and improve the selfefficacy, which is worthy of promotion.
