Abstract Macrophage activation syndrome(MAS)is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of rheumatic disease, which is classified into the category of secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).MAS is often secondary to systemic juvenile idiopathic, however systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated by MAS is rare in children. Moreover, formal HLH-2004 criteria are frequently insensitive for MAS diagnosis, thus disease-specific MAS criteria have been published. In this paper, the clinical recognition, diagnostic guidelines and treatment of children with SLE complicated by MAS were reviewed by a case report and the literature review.
