Abstract Objective To investigate the expression and clinical significance of CLCA4 gene in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Methods The expression of CLCA4 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma was detected by using TCGA database based on bioinformatics.A box diagram of CLCA4 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma under various conditions was drawn by analyzing 552 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients (up to October 2018) in the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) database of website. The effects and importance of CLCA4 gene differential expression on patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and the biological function or pathway of determining the main effects of different genes were discussed by survival curve, protein-protein interaction network (PPI), gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genome (KEGG).Results The expression of CLCA4 was significantly down-regulated in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, and the low expression of CLCA4 was associated with poor prognosis (P=0.01883).The results of PPI, GO and KEGG analysis showed that CLCA4 was not only involved in the regulation of ion channels and epidermal development, but also related to immune and inflammatory responses. Conclusion CLCA4 participates in the immunoregulation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, suggesting that the immune abnormality of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma may be the key factor affecting the survival rate of patients, and provides a new research direction and ideas for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
