Correlation between smoking index and carotid artery intima-media thickness in males aged from 15 to 44 years old in Luohu District of Shenzhen City |

Abstract Objective To analyze the correlation between smoking index(SI)and carotid artery intima-media thickness(IMT)in 300 male patients aged from 15 to 44 years old in Luohu District of Shenzhen.Methods A total of 300 male smokers aged from 15 to 44 years old in Luohu District of Shenzhen from July 2016 to November 2017 were included in the study group,and 300 non-smoking men of the same age were included in the control group.The health survey and physical examination were made,and the correlation between SI and carotid artery IMT was analyzed.Results The levels of bilateral carotid artery IMT,carotid artery stiffness index,PSV/EDV and PI in the study group were higher than those in the control group,and the levels in the left side were higher than those in the right side (P<0.05).The levels of bilateral carotid artery CC and DC in the study group were lower than those in the control group,and the levels in the left side were lower than those in the right side(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the bilateral carotid artery RI in the study group (P>0.05).There was no significant difference in the bilateral carotid artery IMT,carotid artery elasticity parameters and carotid hemodynamics indexes between bilateral in the control group (P>0.05).There was a significant positive correlation between SI and bilateral carotid artery IMT (P<0.05).Conclusion Smoking can cause the thickening of bilateral carotid IMT and the decrease of carotid artery elasticity and blood flow velocity.With the increase of SI,the IMT thickening of bilateral carotid artery is more significant.
