Abstract Objective To explore the effect of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture on gastrointestinal dysfunction in severe patients. Methods A total of 142 severe patients with gastrointestinal dysfunction hospitalized in the Department of Critical Care Medicine, the First People's Hospital of Lanzhou City from November 2020 to August 2023 were selected as the research objects.According to the wishes of patients and their families, they were divided into an acupuncture group and a conventional group, with 71 cases in each group. On the basis of the treatment of primary diseases, the acupuncture group was treated with traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture at relevant acupoints. The conventional group was treated with Mosapride on the basis of the treatment of the primary disease. The gastric emptying time (GET),antral contraction frequency (ACF),antral motility index (MI) and intestinal peristalsis before and during treatment were compared between the two groups, and the defecation time, length of ICU stay, total hospitalization cost and mortality were compared between the two groups. Results The GET after 7 days of treatment in the two groups were shorter than those after 5 days of treatment, the GET after 5 days of treatment in the two groups were shorter than those after 3 days of treatment, and the GET after 3 days of treatment in the two groups were shorter than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The GET at 3,5 and 7 days of treatment in the acupuncture group were shorter than those in the conventional group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The ACF of the two groups after 7 days of treatment were faster than those after 5 days of treatment, the ACF after 5 days of treatment were faster than those after 3 days of treatment, and the ACF after 3 days of treatment were faster than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The ACF of the acupuncture group at 3,5 and 7 days of treatment were faster than those of the conventional group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The MI of the two groups after 7 days of treatment were higher than those after 5 days of treatment, and the MI of the two groups after 5 days of treatment were higher than those after 3 days of treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P <0.05).The MI of the acupuncture group after 3 days of treatment was higher than that before treatment, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).The MI of the acupuncture group were higher than those of the conventional group at 3,5 and 7 days after treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The intestinal peristalsis of the two groups after 7 days of treatment were faster than those after 5 days of treatment, and the intestinal peristalsis of the two groups after 5 days of treatment was faster than those after 3 days of treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The intestinal peristalsis of the acupuncture group after 3 days of treatment was faster than that after 1 day of treatment, and the intestinal peristalsis of the acupuncture group after 1 day of treatment was faster than that before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).After 1,3,5 and 7 days of treatment, the intestinal peristalsis of the acupuncture group were faster than those of the conventional group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The defecation time of the acupuncture group was shorter than that of the conventional group, the total hospitalization cost was less than that of the conventional group, and the mortality rate of the acupuncture group was lower than that of the conventional group on the 10th to 42nd day after treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P <0.05).Conclusion Mosapride has a certain effect on gastrointestinal dysfunction in severe patients, but traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture treatment through Neiguan,Hegu,Zhongwan,Tianshu,Qihai,Zusanli,Fenglong,Sanyinjiao and other acupoints has a definite effect on gastrointestinal dysfunction in severe patients. The benefits of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture treatment for gastrointestinal dysfunction in severe patients are greater than Mosapride treatment. It can shorten the gastric emptying time, increase the amplitude of gastric antrum movement and intestinal peristalsis, improve MI,improve gastrointestinal dysfunction earlier, reduce the total cost of hospitalization, and improve the prognosis of patients.
