Changes of maxillary sinus mucosal thickness in molars with severe periodontitis |

Abstract Objective To investigate the changes of maxillary sinus mucosa thickness corresponding to molars in patients with severe periodontitis. Methods From February 2017 to February 2019, patients with severe periodontitis treated by maxillary molar extraction were selected as the study group (n=14), and patients with mild alveolar bone resorption in maxillary molars treated in the department of stomatology at the same time were selected as the control group(n=15). The patients in both groups were examined by conical bundle CT (CBCT), the maximum thickness of maxillary sinus mucosa (maxMT) and the minimum alveolar bone height (minRRH) of molars were measured and compared between the two groups. And the proportion of mucosal thickening was counted. After 6 months of extraction of maxillary molar and site preservation, the changes of mucosal thickness of maxillary sinus in the study group were analyzed. Results The thickness of maxMT before treatment in the study group was higher than that in the control group,the proportion of mucosal thickening in the maxillary sinus was higher than that in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05); the minRRH before treatment in the study group was lower than that in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). After molars extraction in the study group, the corresponding maxMT was significantly lower than before treatment, and the proportion of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening was lower than before treatment, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion The thickness of molars corresponding to maxillary sinus mucosa in patients with severe periodontitis is significantly increased, and the pathological thickening is significantly improved after simultaneous extraction site preservation.
