In vitro study on the effect of different concentrations of Gallnut extract on streptococcus mutans |

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of different concentrations of Gallnut extract on streptococcus mutans.Methods The clinical data of 100 patients with caries who were treated in our hospital from June 2015 to January 2019 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into group A (rinse the mouth with fluoride mouth rinse, 40 cases), group B(rinse the mouth with 16 mg/ml Gallnut extract, 30 cases) and group C (rinse the mouth with 32 mg/ml Gallnut extract,30 cases) according to the different treatment methods. The saliva of the patients was taken to make bacterial culture medium before treatment and after treatment for 3 months. The number of streptococcus mutans colony in bacterial culture medium, the total incidence of adverse reactions and the recurrence rate during follow-up were compared among the three groups. Results The number of streptococcus mutans colony in bacterial culture medium in three groups after treatment was fewer than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The number of streptococcus mutans colony in bacterial culture medium in group B and C after treatment was fewer than those in group A, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The number of streptococcus mutans colony in bacterial culture medium in group C after treatment was fewer than that in group B, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The total incidence rates of adverse reactions in group B and C were lower than those in group A, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The recurrence rates during follow-up in group B and C were lower than those in group A, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Applying 32 mg/ml of high concentration of Gallnut extract to the clinical treatment of patients with caries can effectively decrease the number of streptococcus mutans colony, have a stronger antibacterial effect on streptococcus mutans, and reduce the incidence of adverse reactions and recurrence rate, which has higher safety and better curative effect.
