Abstract Skeletal muscle, which accounts for about 40% of adult body weight, plays an important role in regulating the basic life activities like respiration and movement of the human body. At present, due to the volumetric muscle loss of skeletal muscle caused by severe trauma, the repair ability of skeletal muscle will be severely damaged, which can lead to muscle dysfunction or loss of function. And the clinical treatment of autologous tissue transplantation also has the problems of high cost, great risk and unstable treatment outcomes. In the biomedical field, a variety of natural and synthetic materials have been developed for skeletal muscle regeneration. As a kind of polymer network system with water as dispersion medium, hydrogel has the characteristics of good biocompatibility and can imitate the natural extracellular matrix. Hydrogel is widely used in cell and growth factors delivery of muscle tissue engineering at present. In this paper, the classification and preparation of hydrogels and their applications in skeletal muscle tissue regeneration are reviewed, and the research status of hydrogel materials from different sources in skeletal muscle regeneration was mainly discussed, which is hoping to provide some reference for the design and application of skeletal muscle regeneration materials.
