Investigation on the current situation and influencing factors of doctors suffering from workplace violence in a grade-A first-class hospital in Hu′nan Province |

Abstract Objective To understand the situation, characteristics and risk factors of doctors suffering from workplace violence in a grade-A first-class hospital in Hu′nan Province, and put forward corresponding countermeasures according to the current situation and risk factors of workplace violence in the hospital. Methods A total of 583 doctors in a grade-A first-class hospital in Hu′nan Province were selected as the research objects in July, 2019, and their basic information, work-related situation, physical and mental health status and workplace violence from which they suffered in the year from July 2018 to July 2019 were investigated through questionnaire survey. Results Among the 583 doctors surveyed who mainly worked in the department of internal medicine, 358 doctors suffered from workplace violence,mainly verbal violence during the day in wards and doctor′s offices, with an incidence rate of 61.41%. The reasons for the violence were mainly the unsatisfactory curative effect and the long waiting time for treatment. When the violence occurred, most doctors were making the rounds of the wards and rescuing patients. Logistic regression analysis results showed that the department of pediatrics (β=1.23, OR=1.41, 95%CI=1.04-11.24), emergency department (β=2.60, OR=3.06, 95%CI=2.95-58.73), weekly working hours of 46-65 h (β=0.58, OR=1.78, 95%CI=1.15-2.76), weekly working hours>65 h (β=0.91, OR=2.47, 95%CI=1.42-4.31), poor health status (β=0.99, OR=2.68, 95%CI=1.31-5.47) and suffering from mental illness (β=0.90, OR=2.46, 95%CI=1.51-4.02) were the risk factors of doctors suffering from workplace violence (P<0.05). Conclusion The incidence rate of workplace violence in this hospital is high. The hospital should take preventive measures for key departments, shorten the time for consultation, arrange doctors′ working time reasonably, and ensure the physical and mental health of doctors, so as to reduce the incidence rate of workplace violence in hospitals.
