Epidemiological study on unintentional injuries in children aged 0-6 years in Shaoguan District

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the epidemiological status on unintentional injuries among children aged 0-6 years in Shaoguan District,so as to provide reliable evidence for reducing injury and establishing relevant intervention measures.MethodsThe questionnaire was adopted to make an investigation of unintentional injuries among children aged 0-6 years from January to December in 2015 in Shaoguan District,including the basic situation of the family,occurrence of unintentional injuries in children,injury cause,injured season,medical expenses and other information.ResultsAmong the 400 infants and children who suffered from unintentional injuries,there were 238 boys (accounting for 59.5%)and 162 girls(accounting for 40.5%);there was significant statistical difference in the incidence of unintentional injuries between boys and girls(χ2=17.78,P<0.001);there were 256 infants and children aged 4-6 years suffered from unintentional injuries,accounting for 64.0%;while,144 cases infants and children aged 0-4 years had unintentional injuries,accounting for 36.0%;the incidence of unintentional injury of infants and children aged 4-6 years was significant higher than that of infants and children aged 0-4 years,with statistical significant difference (χ2=19.64,P<0.001).The top three injury types of boys and girls were fall injuries,animal bites and burns,accounting for 24.0%,18.5%and 17.5%,respectively.During the spring,summer,fall and winter seasons,the incidence of unintentional injuries in spring and summer was the highest,accounting for 62.5%;and the average medical expenses of all the injured children totaled 3280 Yuan,accounting for 21.7%of the total income of the family.ConclusionUnintentional injuries seriously affect the health status of infants and children aged 0-6 years in Shaoguan District,which will cause heavy economic losses to families and society.Therefore,targeted prevention measures are particularly important.
