Abstract:Objective To conduct a qualitative research on the cognition of undergraduate nursing interns on occupational exposure self-protection after entering clinical practice based on protection motivation theory (PMT),analyze the problems and deficiencies existing in schools and hospitals in occupational exposure self-protection education, and provide reference for schools and hospitals to further improve the occupational protection ability of nursing interns in the future. Methods A total of 13 undergraduate nursing interns who had been practicing for more than 3 months in a Third Grade First Class Hospital in Shanxi Province from September to December 2023 were selected as the respondents for semi-structured interviews. The interview outline was made based on PMT,the phenomenological research method in qualitative research was adopted, and the theme was extracted. Results After interview, four themes were summarized, namely, nursing interns'poor cognitive level of occupational exposure and self-protection awareness, lack of humanistic care, lack of practical education of nursing interns'occupational protection skills, and lack of systematic occupational safety related courses in school and hospital education. Conclusion Schools and hospitals should formulate relevant occupational protection education and teaching plans from the perspective of motivation and guided by the seven core themes of PMT,improve the protection cognition level of nursing interns, reduce the occupational exposure phenomenon in the process of clinical practice, and lay a good foundation for further entering the clinical work.
