Abstract:Objective To investigate the surgical effect and safety of combined management of orthopedics and emergency surgery in the treatment of elderly vertebral compression fractures under the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 30 elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures under the joint management of orthopedics and emergency surgery from March to April 2020 was conducted and selected as a joint group.Another batch of 30 elderly patients with vertebral compression during the non-epidemic period was classified as a control group. The preoperative waiting time, hospital stay, operation duration, bone cement injection volume, postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score, postoperative Cobb angle were recorded in the two groups, and the occurrence of postoperative complications was observed. Results No medical staff was infected with COVID-19,and no hospital infection occurred. The preoperative waiting time of the joint group was shorter than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).The hospital stay, operative duration, bone cement injection volume, postoperative VAS score, postoperative Cobb angle, and total postoperative complications rate were not significantly different between the groups (P>0.05).Conclusion Under the COVID-19 pandemic, the joint management of orthopedics and emergency surgery for the treatment of elderly vertebral compression fractures in multidisciplinary collaborations can reduce the waiting time before surgery and increase the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment at premise of fully implementing anti-epidemic measures.
