Abstract:Depression is a common mental disease that′s closely related to modern life, and its incidence is increasing year by year, and the existing mental health resources have some deficiencies so that the identification rate of depression is low, the disease duration is long, and the recurrence rate is high. Children and adolescents, pregnant women, older adults are at risk for depression, the onset and presentation of depression vary among different populations, and there are risks associated with antidepressant drug interventions during clinical diagnosis and treatment. The latest research shows that the deficiency of folic acid, a water-soluble vitamin, that is essential for human life activities, not only leads to abnormal neural tube development in the fetus during the embryonic period, but may also be associated with neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression. While supplementation of folic acid (especially active folate) for improving depression status and regulating neurotransmitters has a certain adjuvant therapeutic effect. In response to this finding, this paper provides a review of depression characteristics and folic acid interventions in different populations, the aim of this paper reveals the possible role of folic acid in depression in different populations and provides a new way of thinking for the treatment of depression.
