Abstract:Objective To analyze the effect of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in the elderly. Methods A total of 34 elderly patients with BPPV in the General Department of Balizhuang Community Health Service Center from October 2018 to October 2020 were selected as the experimental group. During the same period, 34 elderly people who matched the age and gender of the experimental group and took physical examination in the Physical Examination Department in the same period, and had no history of BPPV were selected as the control group. Seven CVRFs indexes including body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) as well as 2 carotid ultrasound diagnosis indexes including intima-media thickness (IMT) and atherosclerotic plaque were compared between two groups. Results There were no significant differences in CVRFs and incidence of carotid atherosclerotic plaque between the two group (P>0.05). The severity of carotid IMT in the BPPV group was higher than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion CVRFs and carotid atherosclerotic plaque are not independent risk factors of BPPV in the elderly, and carotid IMT can be used as a reference index for risk assessment and early warning of senile BPPV.
