Abstract:Objective To observe the clinical effect of auricle appliances in the treatment of congenital auricle deformities in children. Methods A total of 32 infants with congenital auricle deformities treated with auricle appliances in the Jiangxi Provincial Children′s Hospital from May 2018 to May 2019 were selected. According to the Byrd classification, there were cryptotia (n=14), lop ears (n=8), cup ear (n=2), protruding ears (n=2), helix deformities (n=4), and mixed deformities (n=2). They were divided into the younger group (0-3 months) and the elder group (3-6 months) according to age, with 16 cases in each group. Photographs were taken before and after treatment, with a period of 2 to 4 weeks. The curative effects of children after wearing were observed. Results After the treatment, the auricle morphologies were evaluated by family members and doctors jointly, which were divided into excellent (same as normal ears), good (basically normal), and poor (no change or slight improvement). All auricle deformities were improved, 29 cases (90%) were evaluated as excellent, and 3 cases (10%) were good. Two of the children had skin eczema, and one had small skin ulcers, which improved 3 days after topical application of erythromycin ointment. No obvious complications were observed in the remaining ears. After 1 year, there was no recurrence in the re-examination. Conclusion Auricle appliances have an obvious effect on non-invasive treatment of auricle deformities, and the earlier the correction is implemented, the better the effect is. The auricle appliances have a low incidence of adverse reactions and a short wearing time, which can avoid later surgical treatment and psychological hazards. The auricle appliances are easy to operate and promote, becoming the first choice for the treatment of auricle deformities.
