Analysis of influencing factors of psychiatric nurses′attitude towards patient violence and violence management strategies

Abstract:Objective To understand psychiatric nurses′attitudes towards patients′violence and violence management strategies,and analyze its influencing factors.Methods A current survey was conducted of 1165 psychiatric nurses in 31 psychiatric hospitals above grade 2 in Guangdong province from September to December 2019.The personal basic situation table was used to investigate its general situation,Chinese-the management of aggression and violence attitude scale(C-MAVAS)was used to investigate nurses′attitudes towards patients′violence and violence management strategies,the questionnaire method was used to investigate the difficulties encountered by nurses in dealing with patient violence and the factors that influenced the decision-making in handling violence.Results The results of univariate analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the C-MAVASscores of nurses of different education levels and positions towards patient violence (P<0.05);The differences in the C-MAVASscores and total scores of the violence management strategies of nurses of different ages,education levels,positions and technical titles were statistically significant(P<0.05).The results of multiple stepwise regression analysis show that education level and position were the influencing factors of nurses′attitude to violence against patients C-MAVASscore,violence management strategy C-MAVASscore and total score(P<0.05),and there was a negative correlation between them.The difficulties that nurses encounter when dealing with patient violence and the factors that affect their decision-making in dealing with violence were mainly the hospital management system,nurses′own skills,patient′s condition,family support,and ward environment.Conclusion The attitude of psychiatric nurses to the violence of patients and the strategies of violence management are related to the nurses′age,education level,position and technical title.Hospitals should pay attention to the occupational safety of nurses,do a good job of anti-violence skills training,improve the ability of nurses to deal with violence,and reduce the harm of violence to nurses.
