Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of cucumber therapy on improving the comfort of patients with gastrointestinal decompression. Methods A total of 60 patients who underwent gastrointestinal decompression in the Department of Surgery of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2020 to June 2021 were selected as subjects and divided into two groups according to the random number table method, with 30 cases in each group. Both groups were given routine care for gastrointestinal decompression. The control group was given warm water spray and cotton swabs to moisturize the lips, and in the observation group, cucumber therapy was used. Both groups lasted 5 days. The degree of comfort, degree of xerostomia, moisture degree score of mouth and tongue oral mucosa, sleep quality, psychological state and total nursing satisfaction were compared between the two groups of patients. Results The discomfort and the degree of xerostomia in the observation group after intervention for 5 days were milder than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Moisture degree score of mouth and tongue oral mucosa of the observation group after intervention was higher than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The scores of the Pittsburgh sleep quality index questionnaire (PSQI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and self-rating depression scale (SDS) of the observation group were lower than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The total nursing satisfaction of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Cucumber therapy in patients with gastrointestinal decompression can help reduce xerostomia and increase physical and mental comfort, thereby improving patients′ negative emotions and sleep quality, and promoting nursing satisfaction.
