Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease in respiratory department. Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is a manifestation of the further development of the disease for COPD patients, which can cause a variety of complications, and is also one of the main causes of death of COPD patients. The pathogenesis of COPD is complex. At present, western medicine mainly relies on glucocorticoids, bronchodilators and β2 receptor agonists to improve clinical symptoms, but it cannot control the recurrence of the disease. In recent years, with the continuous accumulation of the practice of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of AECOPD, the treatment of COPD with traditional Chinese medicine has also achieved good clinical efficacy. This study summarized and analyzed the related literatures on the treatment of AECOPD in recent years from the aspects of etiology, pathogenesis, syndrome classification and syndrome differentiation, in order to provide theoretical basis for the clinical treatment and scientific research of AECOPD.
