Effect of automatic tube current modulation technique on quality of parotid gland CT images and parotid gland radiation dose

Abstract:Objective To discuss the effect of automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) on the CT image quality of the parotid gland and the amount of parotid radiation.Methods A total of 120 patients with suspected parotid gland diseases admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2016 to June 2017 were selected as the research object.They were randomly divided into two groups as A and B, 60 cases in each group.Routine scanning was performed in group A, and ATCM scanning was applied in group B.Objective image quality parameters (BN, SNR and CNR), subjective image quality score, CT dose index (CTDI) and effective dose length product (DLP) were compared between the two groups.Results There was no statistically significant difference in the BN, SNR and CNR of parotid gland lesions, normal parotid gland parenchyma and subcutaneous fat between the two groups in CT images (P>0.05).In group A, the quality of subjective image were evaluated as 4 point in 54 cases, 3 point in 6 cases, while in group B, the results are 48 cases an 12 cases.There was no significant difference in image quality score between the two groups (P>0.05).The CT dose index of group B was (24.61±0.91) mGy, which was lower than that of group A (28.29±0.44) mGy, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion The ATCM technology used to scan the patients with parotid gland diseases has better image quality and effectively reduce the radiation dose of parotid gland.
