Influence of aromatherapy on psychological distress,nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer

Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of aromatherapy on psychological distress,nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.Methods A total of 120 chemotherapy patients diagnosed and treated in Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Fujian Cancer Hospital from February 2019 to June 2020 were used as the research objects.They were divided into the research group (60 cases) and the control group (60 cases) according to the random number table method.The control group adopted conventional nursing measures,and the research group was given aromatherapy based on conventional nursing care.The distress thermometer(DT) and the National Cancer Institute′s Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Event (NCI-CTCAE) version 4.0 were used to evaluate the patient′s psychological distress,nausea and vomiting on the 1 day before chemotherapy and 1st,3rd,and 5th days after chemotherapy between the two groups.Results There was no statistically significant difference DT score,the grade of nausea and vomiting between the two groups of patients before chemotherapy (P>0.05).The DT score,the grade of nausea and vomiting of the research group on the 1st,3rd,and 5th days after chemotherapy were lower than those of the control group,the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Aromatherapy can reduce the psychological distress of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and prevent nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy.
